In congenital heart disease cases where not enough blood is pumped to the lungs, a Modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt may be surgically inserted between the aorta and the pulmonary artery. The "B-T Shunt" is a palliative measure that increases blood flow to the lungs and decreases an infant's blue appearance. Some congenital heart defects that may require a Blalock-Taussig Shunt are Double Outlet Right Ventricle, Tetralogy of Fallot and Tricuspid Atresia, pictured in the diagram at left. |
