Single Ventricle refers to a group of congenital heart defects in which the heart functionally has only one pumping chamber. In the normal heart, there are two pumping chambers, the right and left ventricles. The Single Ventricle diagram at left demonstrates the effects of one ventricle as opposed to two. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Tricuspid Atresia, Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV), and Double Inlet Left Ventricle are all forms of Single Ventricle congenital heart disease. |
